Maxine M. Grassmeyer

Maxine Marjorie Grassmeyer of Kearney passed away at Brookestone Gardens, April 17, 2026 at age 92. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 2nd at First Lutheran Church 3315 Avenue G, Kearney, Nebraska. Maxine Majorie Jarosz was born March 16, 1934 near Hazard, Nebraska and graduated from Ravenna High School in 1952. She and Jerry Grassmeyer were married on April 19, 1954, at Zion Lutheran Church in Kearney. The couple farmed in the Riverdale area for more than 40 years. They spent many years on bleachers across Nebraska, supporting their children’s athletic teams, and were long-time members of First Lutheran Church, Kearney. After her children were grown Maxine worked as an administrative assistant in the Journalism and Mass Communications Department at the University of Nebraska-Kearney, where she was named one of eleven Outstanding Employees in 1995. She was a member of a Kearney P.E.O. Chapter for many years and was blessed with countless lifelong friends, including a group of Ravenna high school girlfriends known as “The Lucky Seven.” Three surviving members of the Lucky Seven continue to correspond to this day. Left to cherish her memory are her sons Dan (Kathy) of Thornton, Colorado, Jim (Eileen Sawyers) of Fremont; daughter Jan (Russ) McLandsborough of Overland Park, Kansas, grandchildren Emily (Ryan) Morrison, Brady (Sara) Grassmeyer and Riley (Bridget Tiernan) Grassmeyer all of Denver, Colorado, Jeffry (Abby) Grassmeyer of Des Moines, Iowa, Justin (Chelsea) Grassmeyer of Iowa City, Iowa, Max (Kendall) Grassmeyer, of Appleton, Wisconsin, Maggie (Sam Findlay) McLandsborough of Los Angeles, California, Andy (Kortney) McLandsborough of Roeland Park, Kansas; great granddaughters Mara, June, Vera, Lena, Ivy, Lucy and Flora, great grandson Simon, and a new baby on the way. Maxine spent her final years at Brookestone Gardens in Kearney, just down the hall from her sister, Virginia Kaminski, who also survives, as well as three generations of nieces and nephews. Maxine was preceded in death by her husband Jerry Grassmeyer, parents August and Rose Jarosz, sister Irene Buske, brother Arnold Jarosz and grandson Michael. Memorials are suggested to First Lutheran Church of Kearney or the Yanney Heritage Park Foundation of Kearney. Services are entrusted to O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral and Cremation Services of Kearney. Interment will be at the First Lutheran Church columbarium at the conclusion of services on May 2nd.
